Symposium--Crop Yield Gap Assessment for Global Food Security

https://scisoc.confex.com/crops/2013am/webprogram/Session11647.html

Oral Session

Special Sessions

Growing demand for food in the coming decades asks for an substantial increase of the current global crop production. Given limited land suitable for crop production achieving highest possible yields on existing farm land is the only feasible solution to ensure food security while protecting carbon- and biodiversity-rich rainforests, wetlands, and grasslands. Quantifying the size of current exploitable yield gaps — the difference between current farm yields and yield potential — provides the basis for identifying regions best suited for agricultural intensification and helps to prioritize investments in agricultural research and development. This symposium will focus on opportunities to improve methods for quantifying yield gaps at local to global scales, and how to use and interpret yield gap assessment data. Two half-day sessions are proposed. The first half-day session will provide a general overview about the needs for yield gap assessments and recent advances in developed methods to estimate them, including choice of weather, soil and management data and crop models, validation of crop yield potential estimates, and up-scaling from local to national levels. The second half-day session will focus on case studies of yield gap analysis from data-rich regions such as USA and Europe, but also from data-poor regions such as Africa and Asia, encompassing cropping systems across a wide range of climatic, technological, and social conditions. The session will end with a summary presentation about progress in methods used for yield gap assessments and how to interpret the results that emerge from earlier presentations, followed by an open discussion.

International Conference on Agricultural Statistics VI

23-25 October 2013, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The Sixth International Conference on Agricultural Statistics (ICAS-VI), conducted under the auspices of the ISI Committee on Agricultural Statistics is hosted by the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
The conference will convene senior agricultural statisticians from all over the world, mainly representatives from national statistical offices and ministries of agriculture. The conference is open to all producers, suppliers, trainers and users of agricultural statistics, such as economists, statisticians, researchers, analysts and decision-makers from government entities, the academia, development partners and international organizations. It is as well open to the private sector, including the business community.
The Organizing Committee of ICAS-VI is chaired by the IBGE, while the Scientific Program Committee is co-chaired by the IBGE and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The theme of the conference is “Improving Statistics for Food Security, Sustainable Agriculture, and Rural Development. Linking statistics with decision making”.
Before the Conference, USDA will organize two-day training sessions for young statisticians from developing countries. More detailed information about the conference, including  list of sessions, can be found at theconference website.

ICAS-VI
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
23-25 October 2013
The International Conference on Agricultural Statistics (ICAS) is organized every three years, starting from 1998, under the auspices of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) Committee on Agricultural Statistics. The Conference convenes senior agricultural statisticians from all over the world, mainly representatives from national statistical offices and ministries of agriculture. ICAS Conferences are open to all producers, suppliers, trainers and users of Agricultural Statistics, such as economists, statisticians, agronomists, researchers, analysts and decision-makers from government entities, the academia, development partners and international organisations. They are as well open to the private sector, including the business community. One of the objectives of the next Conference is to broaden the participation, involving more widely the academic and research community working on statistical issues related to agriculture.
The first five ICAS conferences have been instrumental in the efforts to improve the quality of agricultural statistics worldwide. Discussions have focused on providing information to monitor poverty related development programmes, particularly in low income countries. A major outcome of recent conferences was a growing awareness that the quality of agricultural statistics was declining. Furthermore, there was widespread recognition that new issues such as food security, environmental sustainability, and rural development bring new demands for better statistics. This growing concern resulted in the development of the Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics and of the Action Plan for its implementation — both unanimously endorsed by the UN Statistical Commission.
The VI International Conference on Agriculture Statistics (ICAS-VI) will be at the service of these initiatives. It will be hosted by the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE), 23-25 October 2013, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The conference theme will be Improving Statistics for Food Security, Sustainable Agriculture, and Rural Development. Linking statistics with decision making, focusing on issues raised by the implementation of the Global Strategy.
Before the Conference, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) will organize and conduct two-day training sessions for young statisticians from developing countries, and FAO will organize Deriving Food Security Indicators from Household Surveys using the ADePT Food Security Module. Country experiences.
The Organizing Committee of ICAS-VI will be chaired by the IBGE, while the Scientific Program Committee will be co-chaired by the IBGE and the USDA.
ICAS-VI will review the efforts derived from the Action Plan for the Implementation of the Global Strategy, sharing best practices and solutions on its implementation; report the first results of the diagnostic procedures of national statistical systems; and review initiatives aimed at capacity building and training. It will also be a favourable occasion to reflect on the recommendations of the strategy, based on practical experiences of its implementation; and to examine its reach and assess new methodological development needs.
The Conference promises a truly diverse and exciting programme consisting of plenary keynote speeches delivered by prominent speakers in this field, round table discussions and parallel sessions led by outstanding organizers from all over the world. These are supplemented by poster presentations and exhibitions.

2013 Applied Stats Conference attendees

The Kansas State University Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture provides a forum for discussion of statistical issues motivated by agricultural problems. The conference brings together statisticians from academia, industry, and government to discuss ideas and advancements in the application of statistics to solving agricultural research problems.

This is a three-day conference consisting of a keynote speaker, workshop, a series of contributed papers, and poster presentations. The conference has a relaxed atmosphere to encourage discussions on papers and presentations with authors and other participants. This communication enhances the interface of statistics with the agricultural sciences.

The Kansas State University Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture is unique in that it emphasizes the application of statistics in solving real-life problems, highlighting agriculture, while recognizing the joint effort of the statistician and the agricultural researcher. Presentations made jointly by the statistician and the researcher in agriculture are encouraged. Presentation of data sets and analyses which motivated the work shares equal importance with development of the statistical theory. Papers on either new or innovative applications of existing statistical methodologies are appropriate for presentation at this conference.
